Goodnight Sweet Casey

September 29, 2009

Casey_9914

I had the honor of documenting Casey’s last days with her guardian Dawn, and her family. This was the hardest session I ever had to date. My major concern was that Casey was comfortable. Unable to move much, she laid in her favorite spot, except for a brief moment when Dawn’s father came home and she got a spark of excitement and a small burst of energy. She stood up and greeted him with a kiss.

Tonight will be Casey’s last night with her family. A super hard decision her family struggled with for months as Casey’s health was quickly deteriorating. Casey is a German Shepard/Chow/Rottweiler mix and would have been 16 years old in November. Casey is a fighter. When she was just a pup she fought a rare form of tissue cancer and miraculously recovered against the odds. Even in her last days, unable to walk and eat, she didn’t want to leave her loved ones. The love she had for her family was so present in her eyes. Casey’s family didn’t want to have to make this decision, they wished that Casey would have made it for them, but being the stubborn fighter Casey is, she was holding on. She was holding on to the great life and love she was given by her family, even if it meant she would suffer. But, it was just to hard to sit and watch her suffer, so tonight, Casey will be heading to the “rainbow bridge” with all her loving memories of her family and the wonderful life she had here. She will have a new energy, no ailments, no more suffering and will be able to run and play like a puppy again.

To Casey’s family, thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet Casey.  As an outsider, I saw the love in her eyes that she had for you.  It was shining so bright and in her eyes she was still that puppy you knew before and I know that’s why it was so hard to let go. I am so sorry for your loss.  Please remember all the good times and love Casey gave you.  You gave her a great life filled with love.  She was lucky to have you and you were lucky to have her.  She left you with a lot of loving memories and I know she will live in your hearts forever.

LAST NIGHT

I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying,
You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly
as you brushed away a tear,
“It’s me, I haven’t left you,
I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.”

I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times,
your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today,
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you,
that I’m not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house,
as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said ” it’s me.”

You looked so very tired,
and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know,
that I was standing there.

It’s possible for me,
to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty,
“I never went away.”

You sat there very quietly,
then smiled, I think you knew…
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you.

The day is over…
I smile and watch you yawning
and say “good-night, God bless,
I’ll see you in the morning.”

And when the time is right for you
to cross the brief divide,
I’ll rush across to greet you
and we’ll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you,
there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out…
then come home to be with me.

A Special Friendship

These two friends will melt your heart! Too cute for words!

Feedback Request

September 25, 2009

Besides animals, I am passionate about the arts. I enjoy discovering and showcasing new artists and my dream is to one day own a gallery. Since I don’t have a gallery yet, I’ll use my blog to showcase new and talented artists.

Laura, one of my clients, (Fritz’s mom) is a very talented painter. She enjoys painting animals. When I saw her work I was amazed. I was even more amazed at the fact that she wasn’t doing anything with her talent. Laura works mostly with acrylics, but has created some portraits using pencil. I think her contouring and proportions are very good and she really has a great eye. Unfortunately, these photos don’t do her work justice. I thought I think she needs to let people see her creations, so I am posting photos she took of some of her work here on my blog. Laura is very curious to see what people think, so feedback, whether it’s a compliment or constructive criticism, is appreciated.

The Happy Act

September 25, 2009

This is a great step for responsible pet owners and sheltering facilities if it can be passed through. Please share with everyone you know!

Introduced by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, H.R. 3501—known as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act—is a federal bill that would reward responsible pet parents by allowing them to keep more money in their pockets come tax time.

We all want to give our animal companions the best care we possibly can, but it seems that pet care costs are always on the rise—and these days, it’s harder than ever to stretch the family budget. That’s why the ASPCA supports H.R. 3501, which would amend U.S. tax code to allow qualifying pet care expenses, including veterinary care, to be tax-deductible.

This means that when you prepare your income taxes, money you spent on pet care that year would count as non-taxable income—and you can deduct up to $3,500 per year!

Please help support the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.

What You Can Do
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center online to send an email to your U.S. representative and urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.

Balance

September 24, 2009

Yikes! It’s been awhile since my last post. After a bout of adrenal fatigue for a couple of months, and finally feeling like my old self again, I have been trying to find some balance in my life between work and play. I don’t ever want to feel that ‘burnt out’ again, it wasn’t fun. My body gave me a message and I heard it loud and clear. I’ve been trying to limit my computer time and spend more time with the people and puppies I have been neglecting. So, in the last few days I spent some time with friends, took my niece out for dinner and shopping, took my dogs out to the park and of course worked. Last night I had a session with a sweet, 14yr old pup named Casey. Casey has only a handful of days left in her and I was honored to be able to capture her in her last days. I will be posting photos from that session in the next few days.

Why is having fun so hard to do? It’s weird that I have to remind myself to have some fun! Do you have a good balance between work and fun? I’d love to see some comments/tips on how you balance your life.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter – a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” ~Henri Matisse

I took my niece Gianna to Oregano’s for their famous pizza cookie……..we ate the whole thing!

Then to the mall for some new outfits………(Gianna doing her best vogue pose)

Shelter Pets Need Your Love

September 11, 2009

Whenever I work at the shelter, I am reminded of how many lives are unnecessarily ended on a daily basis. These animals have so much love to give.  Please consider saving a life, shelter pets need your love. Adoption saves more than just the life of the pet you adopt. If you adopt from an animal shelter, you’re making room for another dog or cat, or you’re allowing other dogs or cats at the shelter to be kept for a longer period of time, giving them a better shot at being adopted. If you adopt from a humane society, an SPCA or a rescue organization, you’re allowing that organization to rescue another dog or cat for adoption at a public shelter, which, of course, saves the life of that little guy plus the lives of others at that shelter by creating space so new pets can be kept longer. As you can see, adoption is truly a continuous cycle of saving lives and it’s the right thing to do!

“I Need Love” music and lyrics courtesy of Daylight for Deadeyes

Between three and four million dogs and cats are euthanized each year in animal shelters in the United States. But if more families looking for a pet this year would adopt their new furry friend from a shelter, we could put an end to this tragedy.

With the help of animal lovers like you, we can spread the word about the benefits of adoption and work to end the senseless euthanasia of homeless pets nationwide.

Did you know that one in four shelter dogs are purebred? Or that most animals in shelters are victims of circumstance, there only because of “people problems” like divorce, foreclosure, and change in lifestyle? The bottom line is shelter animals make great pets.

Please adopt your next pet–then urge your friends, family, and loved ones to do the same.

Fritz

September 2, 2009

I had the pleasure of having a session with a cute little Mini-Schnauzer named Fritz yesterday. He was the sweetest little guy and a great model who loved playing with his toys! Besides playing with his toys, Fritz likes to eat bugs and is a total momma’s boy.  His momma Laura sure is lucky to have a sweet little guy like Fritz!
